Government officials here are reviewing the safety of a geothermal energy project that scientists say set off an earthquake in mid-August, shaking buildings and frightening many residents of this small city. (German Geothermal Project Leads to Second Thoughts After the Earth Rumbles | NYT)
I didn’t know that this was a thing? I believe that this type of geothermal energy is of the “hot rocks” variety (drill a deep as hole, but a water hose out of it, run turbines with the steam).
I’ll be honest, the idea that we can make earthquakes so easily is sort of shocking to me … does that mean that we have to knock quakes, at least low-level ones, off the list of the natural Sublime?
I say: lemons, lemonade. If we can make earthquakes, can’t we use them for energy, too?
